Huntington Internal Medicine Group, Huntington, West Virginia

The Huntington Internal Medicine Group (HIMG) in Huntington, West Virginia began as a four-physician partnership in 1969. The following year, tragedy struck Huntington when the Marshall University plane crash took the lives of many from the tight-knit community, including a number of prominent Huntington physicians. Because of the loss of their partners, four additional physicians joined the practice and HIMG became an eight-physician partnership that has grown tremendously in both size and scope in the subsequent half a century to become the region’s premier multi-specialty medical group. As HIMG leadership envisioned and then crafted plans for how the organization might continue to grow and evolve in service to the Huntington metropolitan region in the decades to come, the organization’s top leader recognized the need to provide professional development and leadership training to his small but mighty 20-person leadership team to ensure they were well-prepared for the next chapter of the HIMG journey, and this is where EPIC Mission enters the picture.

One key to successful plan execution within any organization is ensuring that each team member has been placed in their lane based on their gifting and then allowed and empowered to work within their gifting most of the time to carry out tasks and own responsibilities towards achieving the goals of the plan. This is where things often go sideways. A seemingly perfect plan can fall flat, and a seemingly healthy organization can stumble or stagnate, not because the team is not passionate or chalked full of talented individuals, but because these folks are not properly aligned based on who they are, how they’re wired and what their specific gifts and talents may be. Also, many teams are often unable to realize their true potential due to a lack of understanding and appreciation for the other members’ talents and abilities due to differing personalities. EPIC spent nearly a year working through a customized organizational development curriculum with the HIMG leadership team, starting with the DISC and TEAMS assessments to allow for the gleaning of deep individual and team insights upon which to build as monthly workshops sought to teach new ways of thinking and introduced new tools, tactics, and methods allowing the organization to rise to the next level and deepen its impact towards achieving its bold vision for the future of the practice.

Carl Lee is a former South Charleston High School and Marshall University football standout who went on to play twelve years in the National Football League, earning All-Pro status and becoming one of the storied Minnesota Vikings franchise’s Top 50 Greatest Players. In the mind of many others, Carl was never even supposed to play football in college, let alone make it to the NFL. He has remained humble and hungry throughout his life, rising from meager beginnings to overcome obstacles and make it to the pinnacle of his sport. Though his work has taken him to many places, he has never forgotten his true home of South Charleston, West Virginia and Carl is driven to create an impactful legacy that will live on beyond his life and continue to change lives in communities just like his. He had a grand vision that needed structure and definition so that it could grow into the sustainable, impact-producing initiative that resided in his heart. Enter Jeremy Turner and EPIC Mission.

Carl and Jeremy were introduced via a mutual connection in early 2017 and the friendship and professional relationship bloomed from there. (Great example of the power of networking.) With immediate mutual trust and a shared belief that the future can be better than the present, Carl and Jeremy began meeting regularly to discuss various elements of Carl’s vision so that the framework could be designed with intentionality using current best practices from the worlds of innovation, entrepreneurship and social enterprise. Legends Building Legends sprung forth as a means to deliver on the vision of Carl and fellow West Virginia native, Marshall University standout and NFL star Randy Moss, who had by this time joined Carl in this endeavor. Jeremy and Carl have worked through designing the underlying business model, have worked to define programs and services that fill gaps and solve current community needs for a defined population and have worked extensively on the language used to describe LBL and all that the organization wishes to achieve. As with all growing early-stage organizations, the work with LBL is ongoing. The future is bright for Legends Building Legends and those the organization serves, and Jeremy remains excited to continue pouring into all that Carl envisions for his legacy.

Hoskins Park Ministries (HPM) is a Christian ministry established in 2006 with the merger of Jesus Anointed Ministries (JAM), founded by Johnny Allen, and HPM, founded by Tom Wheeler. The two ministries had existed since 2001-2002 and featured overlapping missions of service to high-risk homeless men. HPM’s primary purpose is to share the love of Christ with the poor and homeless by providing transitional housing facilities, clothing, food and other necessary support to those in need. When EPIC Founder Jeremy Turner first came to know Hoskins Park Ministries in 2015, the organization had 13 houses in northwest Charlotte, all within one block of each other, and which could accommodate 60 previously homeless men. Following the departure of Tom as he pursued a new calling, HPM was left in the loving hands of Executive Director Johnny, a pastor who had personally experienced homelessness and drug abuse before finding Jesus and turning his life around. Pastor Johnny’s team included others who also had first-hand experience with drug abuse and homelessness and a small board comprised of seasoned business professionals and local ministry leaders. With an opportunity to press the reset button and begin the next chapter of the ministry’s journey, HPM found themselves in need of strategic planning assistance, fund development planning, organizational development and operations improvement to allow the organization to approach their true potential.

Over the course of nearly 2 years, Jeremy worked with the HPM board, leadership and staff to teach and mentor them and develop the ministry’s infrastructure to provide a firm foundation upon which to build for deeper impact and a sustainable future. Following a collaborative strategic planning effort between Jeremy and another local consultant, three additional engagements between EPIC Mission and HPM sought to address previously identified needs to include system and process development, such as a new participant intake process and clearly defined job descriptions for all staff positions, one-on-one and small group coaching with Johnny and his staff using DISC Profile to teach the team about communication styles and how to embrace the diversity of a team, and fund development planning, to include a deep dive into earned revenue potential around the ministry’s personal and spiritual development programming for the men they served. Hoskins Park Ministries remains one of Jeremy’s favorite clients ever as the personal and professional impact made and the relationships developed while working with Pastor Johnny, his staff and his board are a testament to just how personal this work is for Jeremy and the EPIC Mission team. This serves as yet another example of how one organization can amplify the impact of another organization with a different calling by simply jumping in, showing up and pouring everything they have into helping them to achieve their mission.
