Like many new nonprofit organizations, Jacob’s House is driven by a mission that was birthed from the pain experienced by its founders. JHRC came into being after Thomas and Shawn Smith lost their son Jacob to addiction. After much prayer and consideration, the decision was made to try and prevent another family from experiencing such a devastating loss, while also ensuring that Jacob’s life and death had meaning. Unfortunately, none of the team was experienced in planning and launching a nonprofit organization.
Also like so many newly formed nonprofits, the big vision and impact-driven mission needed a solid plan of action in order to ensure that activity was not being confused for achievement so that true impact could be made. In service to this need, EPIC Mission worked with JHRC by planning and executing a 1-day intensive strategic planning retreat where the organization catalyzed their reason for being, crafted their mission and vision statements, named and defined their core values, established compelling SMART Goals that aligned with their mission and enacted a rolling 30-60-90-day action plan that guided short term successes and constant forward motion without getting lost in the too-distant future. Jacob’s House is a healthy, thriving organization that embodies the type of gritty, determined group of change-makers who inspire us daily.
